About Us

Autonomy Iowa City was established in 2022, originally as the Iowa City Jane Collective, by a group of reproductive justice activists, gestational care workers, abortion companions, doulas, trans rights activists, and healthcare providers who believe that bodily autonomy is a human right. After the 2022 United States Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, we recognized that abortion access in Iowa was under threat. In 2025, we recognized that gender affirming care was under threat after gender identity was removed from the protected classes in the Iowa Civil Rights Act. We organized to build a network of support, ensuring that abortion and gender affirming hormone care would be accessible to those who cannot afford (or simply do not want) to travel out of state to seek healthcare.
